Who Settles?

"I'd like you to meet Bill"

Just a brief history of my past to help you to understand gratitude and appreciation of The ALI Group.

Born with bronchitis, which I outgrew. An appendectomy at age 8. Knee surgery in 1984 was the extent of my illnesses. Athletically inclined; played football, ice hockey and lacrosse. Competitive powerlifter on a national basis. Taught and coached on the high school and small college level. Kept my body in great physical shape and really enjoyed all of my activities.

In July of 1996, I decided to go into commissioned sales in the Knoxville area. My wife had a brain bleed from a birth mark on her brain in August of 1996, leaving her with a complete loss of memory. My focus and concern was directed to her and her recovery which prevented my total commitment to selling and drained our bank accounts. We were on a COBRA plan from my previous employment. At the end of our COBRA, we were unable to obtain any medical insurance because of her illness.

On April 4, 1998, my daughter noticed the color of my skin was jaundiced. This led to a visit to the emergency room, to a family out-patient doctor, to a Cat-Scan, to diagnosis of something serious, to an endoscope, to the confirmation of pancreatic cancer, to surgery, which confirmed pancreatic cancer which spread into my liver. Luckily, we were able to obtain TennCare Medical Insurance through our state.

In each medical situation, I only saw myself getting deeper and deeper into debt. I had no income coming in and we were struggling to make ends meet before this all happened. We were living on my wife’s disability and her part-time job. We were getting calls from our creditors, our rent and living expenses were one month behind and I seriously considered letting myself die and letting my family collect on my insurance policy to eliminate our serious financial problems.

I began to negotiate with Doctors and Hospitals for their medical services: most worked with me. After surgery, I began to research various treatments and found very quickly that my state insurance would not pay for any alternative or out- of-state treatments. The alternative treatments were very expensive. So my treatment would be based on what TennCare would pay and on what medical doctors would accept as payment in full.

After one of my “Pity Parties” I went to church for a visit and begged God for help. I came home and found a brochure of The ALI Group. It was a miracle. I called immediately, their staff was very compassionate and understood exactly what I was going through and within several days I completed an application. The information process took about two weeks and I was informed that my life settlement was approved about a week later and a settlement of 80% of my insurance policy was wired into my checking account. Today, I am debt free, my bills are paid, I have established an emergency account, and I am taking chemotherapy with a new drug. I am researching other forms of treatment which will help me to overcome and defeat my battle with a terminal illness.

The ALI Group Life Settlement Program literally saved my life, both physically and financially. This is a program that should be in everyone’s financial plan. I will be thanking them for the rest of my life.

[Bill passed away on 8/20/99 at peace emotionally and financially. This letter is reprinted with the permission of Bill and his family.]
